Skoda Superb 4×4 Elegance 2.0 TDI, 125kW, 6-speed manual

With the threat of Arctic conditions and the imminent big freeze January seemed like the perfect time to test drive Skoda’s new 4×4 system. We spent a week behind the wheels of Skoda’s Superb Combi………… and not a snowflake in sight!

Why would I want one?
With more leg room than a Mercedes S-Class, if space is what you are looking for then look no further than Skoda’s Superb Combi. Volkswagen and Audi design cues are evident throughout and overall it oozes quality and comfort. The exterior look veers more toward functionality than aesthetics but the roof rails add a nice touch.

For safety, all the boxes are ticked; the Superb has been given a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, which means it is not only superb in name but also reliable and safe to drive.

New to the Skoda range is the Haldex system, a 4×4 system that’s also found on some Audi models and goes under the name of 4Motion in Volkswagen models. It works by sending the majority of torque to the front wheels and redistributing it to the rear when they start to struggle for grip. It can also distribute grip between right and left rear wheels if needs be. What’s under the bonnet? The Superb Estate gets a reassuringly smooth and refined engine range. It’s the same line-up as in the Superb saloon. Our test car was powered by the 125 kW 2.0 litre diesel engine. The DSG twin clutch gearbox is available with the 103Kw 2.0 litre diesel.

What’s it like to drive?
Given the sheer size of the car and weight it is surprisingly good to drive. The addition of the DSG gearbox would add to its overall sharpness and give it a sleeker edge but that said with the standard gearbox is still handles well and is fun to drive.

What are my options?
Three specifications are available; active, ambition and elegance. Our test car was equipped with the top of the range elegance spec.

How much?
The price of the Skoda Superb saloon 4×4 starts at EUR 34,410 for the manual gearbox model with the 125kW version of the engine. Our test car was not equipped with the six-speed twin-clutch DSG automatic gearbox and the choice to opt for one increase the price to EUR 37,090 with the less powerful 103kW engine.

The Verdict
Estate cars are all about comfort and space and space is in abundance in the new Skoda Superb 4X4. The Superb Combi offers a mix of performance, 4 x 4 and economy that takes some beating.
