Citroen DS5 2012

Citroen became synonymous with futuristic car design when the iconic DS emerged in 1955.

The DS range from Citroen hankers after an iconic heritage and is the premium offering from the brand. Two years ago the DS name was resurrected with the introduction of the sporty DS3 three-door supermini followed by the DS4. Now the DS5 is launched as a large five-door form that combines hatchback, estate, crossover, 4×4 and will be available with a diesel hybrid engine.

Inside the interior has been inspired by the world of aviation with pilot-style overhead switchgear and surrounds you in this cockpit style interior of pure luxury. Equally as eye-catching outside the DS5 is lavished with an alternation of gloss blacks and eye-catching chrome-finished details, such as the slender chrome ‘sabres’ that run from the tips of the headlamps to the front windows.

On the road the DS5 feels like a genuine premium contender. The slick gearbox and responsive engine makes for very refined cruising.

Three trim levels are available: DSign, DStyle and DSport and prices will start at €32,500 for the DSign e-Hdi 110 AirdreamEGS6 and rise to €44,850 for the DStyle Hybrid. The best seller is most likely to be  the 160bhp DStyle HDi, costing €36,400.   The entry level DSign comes well equipped as standard with a long list including keyless access and start, cruise control with speed limiter and memory settings and automatic electric parking brake. Upgrading to the DStyle adds among others rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. The range topping DSport gains Front parking sensors, Colour head-up display, Xenon Dual-Function Directional headlamps and a host of luxurious interior additions.

Citroen are hoping the DS5 will steal buyers from BMW, Mercedes or Audi. With bold design and beautiful styling the DS5 will certainly provide an interesting test as to how much buyers are prepared to pay for something truly different.
