Skoda Octavia Scout 4×4 2.0 TDI/103 kW 6-Speed Manual

With its no-nonsense styling, wheel arch extensions and scuff plates Skoda’s Scout points at more crude and capable intent than the regular Octavia; but is it really prepared for anything as the name Scout might suggest?

What’s under the Bonnet?
Powering the Scout is the VW group’s excellent new-generation 2.0-litre common-rail-equipped turbodiesel that pumps out 103kW/320Nm through a smooth six-speed manual or DSG. Drive to all four-wheels is via an intelligent Haldex differential that automatically and instantaneously shuffles torque to the rear wheels when it detects the front pair are losing traction The Haldex system can allocate up to 98 per cent of power to the rear wheels when needed allowing the Scout to handle some fairly adverse terrain. This is by no means a full off-roader but slots in as a rival to the likes of the Volvo XC70, the Subaru Forester and the Audi allroad.

Why would I want one?
For a long time now car manufacturers have realised there are customers who like everything about 4x4s apart from their image. Slotting into this gap, the Scout is a chunkier version of the Octavia with added ground clearance, so it delivers better on-road handling than a traditional high-riding SUV, with more assured grip and 17mm additional ground clearance over the 4×4 version. With bigger bumpers at the front and rear and moulded side protective strips it bears more than a passing resemblance to the Audi Allroad. Black roof rails emphasize the functional nature of the design, and the fitted fog lights with corner function underline the vehicle’s off-road appearance. Inside the cabin is classic VW, with the same blend of restrained style and stylish ambience. Cabin space throughout is excellent.

What’s it like to drive?
On the road the raised suspension is immediately apparent but despite the increased ground clearance, body control is excellent so there’s never that feeling of excessive roll during cornering you often get with vehicles that have a higher centre of gravity. Overall the Scout offers super handling and grip and remains composed and sure-footed on any surface.

What are my options?
All models in the Octavia range are jam-packed with features and offer exceptional value. Our test model was the 2.0 TDI/103 kW equipped with the 6-Speed Manual. The DSG option is offered but will cost in excess of 3,000 EURO more and will increase road tax to 481 EURO.

How much?
The Scout starts at 32,350 EURO (excluding delivery and related charges).

The Verdict
Genuine alternatives to 4×4’s are surprisingly thin on the ground but the Skoda’s Scout is more than capable on and off road and is a very impressive package.
