The All New Lexus GS

The fourth generation Lexus GS saloon has arrived in Ireland. Priced significantly less than its predecessor, Lexus aims to lure buyers away from their Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Inside and out it is completely new. Dramatic, bold and distinctive Lexus have certainly ditched evolution in favour of revolution with the styling of the  GS. In addition the hybrid system has been comprehensively reworked to enhance both fuel economy and overall performance.

The GS 450h is the world’s first front-engine/rear-wheel drive performance saloon to be equipped with a petrol engine/electric motor full hybrid system. There is a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 and two 35kw electric motors powering the GS. One engine is used to capture the energy that would otherwise be lost by braking while the second one contributes power to the drive. With a combined power output of 254 kW /345bhp it sprints from 0-100kph in 5.9 seconds and boasts a top speed of 250kph.

The GS 450h engine uses 22% less fuel than before using 6.0 litres/100km (47mpg). Emissions are just 139g/km of carbon dioxide so the motor tax bill is €225.

The Hybrid also features Lexus’s Adaptive Variable Suspension. This system, which works with the double wishbones up front and multiple links at the back end, varies the damping characteristics according to the road conditions. On the road, the GS 450h is impressive. With responsive steering it is nicely balanced and poised.

Inside the GS is very smart, classy and on a par with the best that Audi can offer. The driving position is excellent and it is supremely comfortable and luxurious throughout. Head room and overall space is good front and rear.  A common issue with hybrid cars is the lack of space in the boot due to the battery but in the GS overall luggage space has been increased by 60% so there is no compromise there.

The new Lexus GS is equipped with the most technologically advanced active safety and driver assistance systems available on the market today. These include an advanced Pre-Crash Safety system that incorporates a Driver Monitor Camera, and an Adaptive Cruise Control system functions at all speeds down to 0 km/h on the GS 450h. Additional active safety features include a Lane-Keep Assist (LKA) system, a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system, the Lexus Night View system, and a Head-Up Display (HUD) with an expanded content menu.
